How did you feel when you woke up this morning?

Were you refreshed and able to jump out of bed….

….. or did it take a while to force yourself up and out of bed, after being rudely shaken out of your slumber by that stupid alarm clock buzz, buzz, buzzing in your ear?

Did your body feel “young” and energetic as you got up, or….

…Were you achy and groggy from another restless night’s sleep?

When you woke up did your partner meet you with a smile and a kiss?…

Or Did they suffer through yet another terrible night’s sleep trying to sleep next to you….

When you looked at yourself in the mirror, did you see a fresh, young face, or….

…. Did you stagger into the bathroom, ankles and knees creaking, hunched over from back pain and tightness, and see an old version of yourself staring back through the mirror? With bags under your eyes, dry & graying hair, wrinkled & dry skin?

When you looked down as you got dressed did you see a fit, lean, and healthy body, or…

Did you see an ever-growing stomach, soft, “flabby” fat, and a body that’s become weak, tired and soft?

Are you happy with the way you look and feel, or…

…. Are you frustrated by your life, with your lack of health, and with you inability to get to sleep and stay asleep?

Do you mumble to yourself, “What the hell? How did I get to look and feel like this?”

Are you at ease and peaceful, or stressed as you get ready for your day?

Do you have to drink multiple cups of coffee before you can even think about being productive and getting through the day?

Do you drink more throughout the day, or even worse, use energy drinks and soda, because you have wild energy swings where you go from feeling good and energetic…. To crashing and felling like you need a nap and can barely lift your eyelids?

Do you get irritated easy? Do you sometimes nod off while driving at the wheel or feel yourself about to pass out in front of the computer while at work?

How many times have you promised yourself you were going to get a better night’s sleep, and maybe even found something that worked, but then you just went right back to not sleeping through the whole night, or even not at all.

How many times in the last couple years have you started a new “diet” or workout program?

Maybe even tried to see a sleep hypnotherapist to help you drift off into that deep slumber you were so used to getting as a child.

How do your failures make you feel?

If you and I were sitting face-to-face, and I asked you point black, after all you just read, “How do you feel?” What would you say?

Look, sleep deprivation, and your health, are serious concerns of yours, and I get it…

… but these other issues are also very serious:

Sleep apnea, muscle weakness, “old” skin and hair, zero energy, low libido, increased heart risk, increased diabetes risk, memory loss…

….and they’re ALL connected.

How many of the following are you currently struggling with?

  • Trouble sleeping (can’t fall asleep or stay asleep)
  • Energy swings (low energy before eating, high after… then crash)
  • Low sex drive (Low stamina)
  • Lack of Intimacy in relationship (Losing the bond that brings you together)
  • Sleeping in separate beds as spouse (Can’t sleep peacefully next to snorer)
  • Moody and irritable (constantly irritated and angry)
  • Not as productive at work (missing deadlines, coworkers plot behind your back)
  • Painful joints (aching back, knees, elbows)

Your brain and sleep deprivation

There is growing evidence showing the connection between a lack of sleep and decreased brain function. Hundreds of studies have established that sleep loss impairs cognitive functions and behavior, including arousal, attention, cognitive speed, memory, emotional intelligence, and decision making.

Your brain requires sleep to “recharge” specific areas such as the parietal lobe and pre-frontal cortex of the brain that control various body functions. By depriving the brain of the sleep it needs the brain is not able to send the correct signals to these body parts to function properly. When comparing the brain of someone who is sleep-deprived to the brain of someone who has slept normally, scientists have found reduced metabolism and blood flow in multiple brain regions. Reductions in blood flow and metabolism are linked to impaired cognitive function and behavior.

In a recent review of scientific studies 16 of them found that sleeping for less than 6 to 8 hours a night increases the risk of early death by about 12%

The obvious signs of sleep deprivation are:

  • Excessive sleepiness
  • Yawning
  • Irritability
  • Daytime fatigue

Stimulants like caffeine and energy drinks aren’t enough to override your body’s profound need for sleep. Behind the scenes, chronic sleep deprivation can interfere with your body’s internal systems and cause more than just the initial signs and symptoms.

When you brain gets sluggish, it make it nearly impossible to perform your best, because that’s where all of your body’s functions are managed.

Think of a car, the brain needs sleep the same way an engine needs time to rest. If you are constantly trying to red line your engine how long do you think it’s going to be until everything shuts down?

It all starts with your brain. And Your brain needs to be recharged with sleep.

Unfortunately, the sleep aids and stimulants you drink, including many energy drinks labeled as “healthy” are causing way more damage to your system than you might think. Instead of trying to put a “band aid” on the problem the best solution is to start at the very source.

Your Sleep and it’s effect on the body.

Let’s start with focusing on different areas of the body and how they are affected by sleep deprivation

Your Brain and the Central Nervous System

Your Central nervous system is the information highway of your body. Sleep is necessary to keep it functioning properly, but chronic insomnia, or interrupted sleep caused by chronic snoring can disrupt how your body usually sends information.

During sleep, pathways form between nerve cells (neurons) in your brain that help you remember new information you’ve learned. Sleep deprivation leaves your brain exhausted, so it can’t perform it’s duties as well. You may also find it more difficult to concentrate or learn new things. The signals your body sends may also come at a delay, decreasing your coordination skills and increasing your risks for accidents.

Being sleep deprived also negatively affects your mental abilities and emotional state. You may feel more impatient or prone to mood swings. It can also compromise decision making processes and creativity.

If sleep deprivation continues long enough, you could start having halluciantions – seeing or hearing things that aren’t there. A lack of sleep can also trigger mania in people who have manic depression. Other psychological risks include:

  • Impulsive behavior
  • Depression
  • Paranoia
  • Suicidal thoughts

You may also end up experiencing microsleep in the day. During these episodes, you’ll fall asleep for a few seconds or minutes without realizing it. Microsleep is out of your control and can be extremely dangerous if you’re driving. It can also make you more prone to injury due to trips and falls.

Lack of Sleep and It’s Effect on Your Immune System

While you sleep, your immune system productive protective, infection fighting substances like cytokines. It uses these substances to combat foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses. Cytokines also help you sleep, giving your immune system more energy to defend your body against illness.

Sleep deprivation prevents your immune system from building up its forces. If you don’t get enough sleep, your body may not be able to fend off invaders. It may also take longer to recover from illness. Long term sleep deprivation also increases your risk for chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease.

Sleep and it’s Effect on Your Respiratory System

The relationship between sleep and the respiratory system goes both ways. A Nighttime breathing disorder called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can interrupt your sleep and lower the quality of your sleep. As you wake up throughout the night, this can cause sleep deprivation, which leaves you more vulnerable to respiratory infections like the common cold and flu. Sleep deprivation can also make existing respiratory diseases worse, such as chronic lung illness.

The TRUTH about sleep…. You can’t just “recharge” without sleep

You’ve heard a million times from health experts, blogers, and on the news that lack of sleep is terrible for you. But most people don’t truly understand WHY it’s so bad.

In fact, most people falsely think that if they drink coffee throughout the day, they can just continue working and think they’ll be just as productive than if they were to get a full 7 to 8 hours of sleep.

Unfortunately, that kind of thinking will lead you to an early grave.
