Arianna_Huffington_V3_631_rgbOne day in 2007, Arianna Huffington woke up to find herself on the floor of her office in a pool of blood.

The Huffington Post founder had collapsed of exhaustion and broken her cheekbone as a result of the fall—a collapse that resulted from working regular 18-hour days for the preceding two years while she was building the site, now one of the most widely-read in the U.S.

The experience—which doctors linked directly to the media mogul’s sleep deprivation—led her to write The Sleep Revolution, available in bookstores today. “I don’t want you to make the mistakes I did,” she says in an interview with Fortune.

We are in the midst of a sleep deprivation crisis, writes Arianna Huffington, the co-founder and editor in chief of The Huffington Post. And this has profound consequences – on our health, our job performance, our relationships and our happiness. What is needed, she boldly asserts, is nothing short of a sleep revolution.  Only by renewing our relationship with sleep can we take back control of our lives.

According to Huffington, the total annual cost of sleep deprivation to the U.S. economy is more than $63 billion in absenteeism and “presenteeism” (“when employees are present at work physically but not really mentally focused”).

Donald Trump brags that he only sleeps few hours a day.

And it’s not just businesses that are hurting from lack of of ZZZ’s, but governments as well. “Our political campaigns constantly feature candidates bragging about how little they sleep and all the long hours they put in. “What they’re actually proclaiming with their burnout machismo is ‘Hey, vote for me—I structure my life so badly that my decision-making is chronically compromised,'” she writes.

Donald Trump boasted about only sleeping about three to four hours a night—she tells Fortune. “He displays all the symptoms of having no impulse control [consistent with sleep deprivation].  He’s a man whose life is out of kilter because he’s not getting enough sleep…[he does things like] retweeting Mussolini and things that if you were getting enough sleep, you would not do.”

Huffington’s number one recommendation: “Take all devices and gently escort them out of the bedroom,” she says. The trick isn’t just to get rid of technology for the night, but to turn sleep into the “sacrosanct ritual” it was in the time of our ancestors.

Huffington’s own rituals have included hot baths, candles, chamomile tea, and meditation, but ultimately, she writes, getting more sleep is about tools and techniques than help relax before night time and using anti-snoring remedies like ZenSleep for snoring partner.

Now that Huffington’s book is finally hitting the shelves, it will up to readers to decide whether they want to join Sleep Revolution.

Top 7 Ways To Stop Snoring In 24 Hrs

After interviewing 57 sleep doctors around the US, our health editors have compiled the top 7 ways to help your husband stop his snoring instantly:

1) Open a Stuffy Nose: If nasal congestion is causing your husband to snore, over-the-counter nasal Vents like ZenVents will help stop snoring by maximizing airflow in nasal passageways. Or, if allergies are the cause, try saline nasal sprays.

2) Elevate His Head: Buying a foam wedge to elevate his head a few inches can help reduce snoring, or buy him a contoured pillow to lift his chin and keep the tongue from blocking the back of his throat as he sleeps. We also recommend trying a product like ZenStrap that gently lifts the lower jaw while keeping the airway open and unrestricted.

3) Side Sleeping: To prevent back sleeping, which triggers snoring, place a pillow against your husbands back to keep him from rolling over or sew a tennis ball in the back of his pajama shirt. This will force him to sleep on his side.

4) Avoid Alcohol Before Bed: Alcoholic beverages can relax the muscles in the throat, and constrict airflow. He should not consume alcohol three to four hours before bedtime.

5) Lose Excess Weight: Fat around the neck can compress the upper airway and impede airflow and is often associated with sleep apnea.

6) Quit Smoking: Smoking causes inflammation in the upper airways that can make snoring worse.

7) Get A Tongue Stabilizing Device

The tongue stabilizing device (TSD) is touted as The Best Oral Appliance Treatment for snoring and sleep apnea. It is a small piece of plastic that sits at your lips and resembles a large pacifier with a hole into which you can insert your tongue.

When used, it can hold your tongue forward, which might alleviate snoring or sleep apnea that occurs with an obstructed airway. One of the most popular models is ZenGuard made by Zen Sleep Labs.
